Australia’s history is filled with diversity, culturally and architecturally. Australia started out as a penal settlement in 1788 and the simple military style structures was a legacy of its harsh beginnings. These early colonial structures were simple and based on need and available materials.
As time progressed the colony was able to not only develop and import more building materials but also to import the architectural vernacular that was in favour in Britain at the time.
There are great benefits in making the decision to extend and renovate. For some the main reason is purely emotional. The family holds a history of memories for many and demolishing may not be an option. The heart will always rule.
North Balwyn is a great suburb of Melbourne. Skyhooks made Balwyn famous with the song Balwyn Calling, but North Balwyn is notable for its great homes and gardens, proximity to the Eastern Freeway and Yarra River environs.
The clients loved their neighbourhood. They lived in a suburb where period and contemporary homes blended harmoniously imbuing a sense of feel good and friendly community. Their home, a post war weatherboard had views to a park across the way and was walking distance to the local amenities. Whilst offering a level of comfort and respecting the architectural features, space was seriously lacking.

Ever wondered where the name Melbourne comes from?
Reservoir is an established suburb just 12kms north of the city. It runs East West between the Merri and Darebin Creeks with the northern boundary being Mahoney’s Road and the Southern Boundary near Tyler and Regent Street.
The Witham brothers had established route 122A (now route 555) from Reservoir to Epping via Lalor in 1948. In the next few years, a number of other operators joined them and formed Reservoir Motors. Here is one of their early buses, a 1951 Commer Avenger with Symons & Fowler body
